How Many Tiles Do I Need? A Guide to Tile Sizes & Quantities

Choosing the right tiles begins with understanding your space. Whether you're planning a kitchen splashback, bathroom wall or a larger interior project, calculating the correct quantity helps you order with confidence.

At Cardoon Studio, our handmade ceramic tiles are available in four sizes, each sold in boxes of 50. Here's how to work out what you need.

1. Measure Your Space

Start by measuring the width and height of the area you plan to tile, in metres.

Multiply the two measurements to calculate the total area in square metres (m²).

For example, a kitchen splashback measuring 2 metres wide and 0.6 metres high has an area of:

2 × 0.6 = 1.2 m²

For walls with windows, doors or other openings, calculate the individual sections before adding them together.

2. Understand Tile Sizes and Coverage

Different tile sizes cover different areas, even when the number of tiles per box remains the same.

Tile size Tiles per box Approximate coverage
10 × 10 cm 50 0.50 m²
13 × 13 cm 50 0.85 m²
15 × 15 cm 50 1.13 m²
5 × 25 cm 50 0.63 m²

Coverage is calculated from nominal tile dimensions, excluding grout joints, cuts and wastage.

Smaller tiles create a more detailed surface with more grout lines. Larger formats offer a broader, more continuous appearance.

Our rectangular 5 × 25 cm tiles can also be arranged vertically or horizontally, changing the rhythm of a wall without changing the material.

3. Allow for Cuts and Wastage

We recommend allowing approximately 10% additional material for a straightforward installation.

For more complex patterns, corners or irregular spaces, a higher allowance may be appropriate. Your installer can confirm the quantity required.

For example, a 1.2 m² splashback with a 10% allowance requires approximately 1.32 m² of tiles.

If you choose our 13 × 13 cm tiles, each box covers approximately 0.85 m².

1.32 ÷ 0.85 = 1.55 boxes

You would therefore need 2 boxes of 50 tiles.

4. Consider the Layout

Tile orientation can change how a space feels.

Square tiles offer a balanced, familiar geometry, while rectangular tiles can introduce vertical height or horizontal movement.

The choice also affects cutting requirements, particularly around sockets, corners and fixtures.

Before installation, we recommend laying out a selection of tiles to understand how the colours and handmade variations work together.

5. Order Samples Before Committing

Colour and glaze respond differently to natural and artificial light.

Our handmade tiles carry subtle variations in surface and finish, so seeing them in your own space is the best way to understand their character.

Cardoon Studio offers sets of two sample tiles, allowing you to compare colours before ordering full boxes.
