Every room has silence. Sometimes a photograph gives it a voice.
Working at the intersection of fashion photography and classical portraiture, Nigerian photographer Lakin Ogunbanwo creates images that are at once intimate and enigmatic. Drawing on the visual traditions of African studio photography, his work explores identity through form, shadow and composition. At the heart of his practice is a desire to document the culture of Lagos, expand the contemporary African visual archive, and tell stories through self-represented African narratives.
Some photographs are understood at first glance. Others ask for patience. They reveal themselves slowly, through the way light settles across a surface, the tension of a silhouette, or the quiet space between what is shown and what is withheld. They leave room for interpretation, inviting each viewer to complete the story in their own way.
