Description

A quiet, neutral matcha bowl made for slow mornings. Soft alabaster glaze settles over warm natural stoneware, moving between cream, ivory and the exposed clay beneath. Each firing creates subtle differences in tone and texture, so no two are identical.

Handmade in Spain, each matcha bowl is individually formed and glazed by independent ceramic makers. The softly irregular surface and variations in the glaze are part of the making process rather than imperfections to be corrected.

Designed for matcha, green tea and other warm drinks, the compact handleless shape sits naturally between both hands. The neutral cream glaze makes it particularly easy to combine with other handmade ceramics and tableware.

Available as a set of 2 or 4 handmade matcha bowls. Pair with our handmade mugs and cups or explore our wider handmade ceramic bowls collection.

Home Styling
  • This is the easiest of the matcha bowls to live with. Cream, ivory and exposed clay sit naturally with timber, linen, stone and neutral ceramics. I tend to leave it on an open shelf or kitchen counter rather than putting it away.
Cultural Essence

The shape of this bowl draws from the Japanese chawan, designed not simply for drinking tea, but for slowing down. Its form invites both hands.

Here, that tradition meets the Mediterranean. The bowl is made from Spanish stoneware, using local Valencian clays and glazes inspired by the colours of sunlit earth, limestone and evening skies. It brings two ceramic traditions into conversation, each with its own respect for material, craft and the rituals of everyday life.

The workshops behind this collection are part of a ceramic tradition that has endured in this part of Spain for more than a thousand years. Techniques travelled across the Mediterranean, where they took root and became part of everyday life.

The result is neither entirely Japanese nor entirely Mediterranean. It belongs somewhere in between: a contemporary object shaped by two cultures that have long understood the value of making, using and living with beautiful things.

Material Intelligence

The blush glaze is painted by hand before firing, building soft layers that settle into the clay in ways that can never be repeated exactly. Each brushstroke leaves a trace, but the kiln decides how it will finally appear.

During the firing, the glaze softens and flows, the clay contracts, and the colours diffuse into one another. What begins as a painted surface becomes something shaped equally by heat, gravity and time.

The maker understands how clay shrinks, how glaze moves, and how minerals transform under intense heat. They guide the process, but the kiln completes it.

Every bowl carries that conversation between hand, earth and fire. No two are exactly alike, and none are trying to be.

Personalisation

A small ceramic espresso cup with a warm cream base and abstract pink brushstroke patterns, set against a solid, warm off-white background.

MADE FOR EVERYDAY USE.

Small bowls designed to earn their place on the table. For olives, dips, nuts and small bites; substantial in the hand, useful beyond a single occasion, and made to be used often.

PAINTED & GLAZED ONE BY ONE.

Each bowl is shaped, painted and glazed by hand. Brushstrokes, glaze movement and subtle variations remain visible, so no two pieces have exactly the same surface or character.

ROOTED IN VALENCIA.

Made in small batches by specialist ceramic makers in Valencia, Spain. Generations of knowledge in clay, glaze and firing give each piece its depth, warmth and distinctly Mediterranean character.
