Tile Buying Guide: Sizes, Measurements & Coverage
Everything you need to measure your space, choose the right tile size and calculate how many boxes to order.
How to Measure Your Space
Walls & Splashbacks
Measure the width and height of the area being tiled. Multiply them together. That is your area in in square metres (m²).
L-Shaped & Irregular Spaces
For L-shaped walls or spaces with corners and recesses, divide the surface into smaller rectangles. Measure the width and height of each rectangle, multiply them separately, then add the results together to get your total area.
For Floors
Measure the length and width of the floor in metres and multiply them to calculate the area (m²). Exclude any permanent structures or openings that won't be tiled.
How Many Boxes Do You Need?
Once you've calculated your total area, add 10% to allow for cuts, breakages and spare tiles. Then divide by the coverage of your chosen tile size.
A worked example
Your wall measures 2 m².
01 | Add 10%
2 m² × 1.10 = 2.2 m²
02 | Calculate the boxes
Each box covers 0.50 m².
2.2 ÷ 0.50 = 4.4 boxes
03 | Round up
You need 5 boxes.
Always round up to the next whole box. For complex layouts, diagonal patterns or spaces requiring many cuts, consider a 15% allowance instead.
