Description

The bowl that earns its place on the counter, whether it’s holding olives, rings or nothing at all.

Handmade in Spain from high-fired stoneware, each handmade ceramic bowl is thrown and painted individually. A single cobalt brushstroke moves across the cream surface, leaving subtle differences in every piece.

Made for olives, nuts, dips, sauces and small sharing plates, but useful well beyond the table. Leave one by the door for keys, beside the bed for jewellery, or simply out on the kitchen counter.

Wide, shallow and footed, with enough weight to feel substantial in the hand. The cobalt is painted beneath the glaze, becoming part of the ceramic itself rather than sitting on its surface.

Available as a set of 2 or 4 handmade bowls. Pair them with our handmade plates and tableware for an informal table where no two pieces need to match exactly.

Home Styling
  • I tend to leave this one out. On the kitchen counter for olives or sea salt, beside the bed for rings, or near the door for keys. The cobalt works particularly well with linen, pale wood and simple glassware, but it doesn't need styling to earn its place.
Cultural Essence

The cobalt in this bowl carries a history older than the workshops that make it. Brought by artisans who travelled from Persia, through North Africa, across the Mediterranean, it arrived in this part of the world over a thousand years ago and never left. Not as decoration. As language.

The workshops behind this collection are part of that living tradition, still running in the hands of independent makers who chose to stay, to work slowly, to keep making things the way they know how. Valencia's ceramic heritage once decorated the palaces of the Medicis and the floors of the Pope. What's remarkable is that it never became museum craft. It stayed in the hands of the people.

The world moved fast. They kept this as a sign of who they are.

Material Intelligence

Red earth mixed with quartz and feldspar, fired until it holds heat, resists water, lasts. High-fired twice, dense enough to start the morning with and look better for it over time.

Each bowl is hand-thrown and hand-painted, so the variations you see, where the cobalt pooled, where the brush lifted, are the record of how it was made. Not inconsistency. The maker's hand, still visible.

The cobalt is painted beneath the glaze, not over it. It becomes part of the clay itself. It will not fade.

This is what Glenn Adamson, in Fewer Better Things*, calls 'material intelligence'; a knowledge that lives not just in the hands, but in an understanding of how clay moves, resists, and transforms; how it holds heat, absorbs light, and feels right in the hand.

Personalisation

Email team@cardoonstudio.com for complimentary personalisation—add a special date, meaningful quote, or initials to the back of your piece.

A small ceramic espresso cup with a warm cream base and abstract pink brushstroke patterns, set against a solid, warm off-white background.

MADE FOR EVERYDAY USE.

Small bowls designed to earn their place on the table. For olives, dips, nuts and small bites; substantial in the hand, useful beyond a single occasion, and made to be used often.

PAINTED & GLAZED ONE BY ONE.

Each bowl is shaped, painted and glazed by hand. Brushstrokes, glaze movement and subtle variations remain visible, so no two pieces have exactly the same surface or character.

ROOTED IN VALENCIA.

Made in small batches by specialist ceramic makers in Valencia, Spain. Generations of knowledge in clay, glaze and firing give each piece its depth, warmth and distinctly Mediterranean character.
