Description

A handmade pearl white terracotta tile, made individually in Spain and finished with a soft matte surface. Chalky white and subtle natural undertones create gentle variations across the tile, while its porous texture and organic edges make every piece slightly different.

The wall becomes part of the room.

Handmade in Manises, Spain, using terracotta clay and traditional ceramic techniques. Unlike our gloss terracotta tiles, the matte surface retains a more tactile, natural character.

Suitable for kitchen splashbacks, bathroom walls, fireplace surrounds and decorative interior walls.

Available as a single sample or in boxes of 50 tiles.

13 × 13 cm · 50 tiles cover approximately 0.7 m²
15 × 15 cm · 50 tiles cover approximately 1 m²

1.4 cm thick · Matte finish · Surface mounted

Home Styling
  • One tile changes a corner. Twenty tiles change a room. They work on a kitchen splashback, around a bathroom mirror, or stacked loosely on a shelf like something collected over time. The glazed surface sits naturally beside stone, limewash, linen, and aged timber, with soft whites and warm earth tones that bring depth without feeling uniform. Use them in a straight grid for something quiet and grounded, or keep the layout more informal, as though it evolved slowly over years. Morning light brings out the variation in tone and texture, while evening light softens everything into something warmer and more muted.
Cultural Essence

For generations, Manises was not a town that made ceramics. It was a town made by ceramics. The workshops defined the rhythm of daily life: who worked, what they learned, how they spent their time, who they married. Entire families organised themselves around the kiln. Fathers passed mineral knowledge to their children not as a trade secret but as a shared language, the way you know the streets of the place you grew up in.

That knowledge shaped the physical town too. House facades were covered in leftover tiles. Street names recorded the workshops that once lined them. The local festival still throws ceramic pieces from floats into the crowd, a ritual that turns the object of labour into an act of collective joy. The town did not just produce ceramics. It expressed itself through them.

What is at stake now is not the survival of a technique but the survival of a way of life built around it. The workshops that remain are not museums. They are living workplaces where the connection between earth, hand, colour, and imagination still holds. A UNESCO Creative City, Manises is trying to carry that forward: not by preserving the past but by finding new reasons for the craft to exist in the present, and new hands willing to keep it going.

Material Intelligence

Terracotta clay from Manises, shaped and painted by hand. The same hands, the same techniques, practised in this town outside Valencia for over a hundred years.

The glaze is applied by brush, colour by colour. No two tiles come out identical. The edges shift slightly, the tone deepens or lifts depending on where it sat in the kiln. This is not inconsistency. It is the record of how it was made.

Fired at high temperature, the glaze fuses to the body. What remains is waterproof, mould resistant, and hard enough to outlast the wall it's mounted on.

Manises has been the centre of Spanish ceramic tradition since the 14th century. The craft never left. It just stopped being noticed. These tiles bring it back into rooms that are lived in.

Our Values

A hand holds a paintbrush applying glaze to a rectangular ceramic tile on a light wood table, with other glazed tiles and small bottles in the background.

MADE SLOWLY, BY HAND.

Each tile is shaped, glazed and finished by specialist makers, using techniques refined through generations. The marks of the hand remain visible, giving every surface its own character.

CLAY, GLAZE AND COLOUR.

We choose natural clays and expressive glazes for their depth, texture and response to light. Small variations in tone, surface and finish are intentional, no two tiles are exactly alike.

ROOTED IN MANISES.

Our tiles are made in Manises (Spain), a city shaped by centuries of ceramic making. Its community keeps the knowledge and human touch of this remarkable ceramic tradition alive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these tiles in showers, on floors or outdoors?

Our hand-glazed ceramic tiles are suitable for interior walls and floors, including kitchen splashbacks, bathrooms and shower walls. They withstand warm conditions and have an easy-to-clean glazed surface, making them a practical, durable finish for everyday interiors.

We do not recommend outdoor installation where temperatures may fall below −5°C, as freezing conditions can affect the tile’s integrity.

How much variation should I expect?

Each tile is hand-painted and glazed, so small differences in colour, texture and edges are expected. We recommend ordering a sample and mixing tiles from across your order during installation to create a balanced finish.

Can I mix colours or buy fewer than 50 tiles?

Yes, you can combine two colours within a box of 50 tiles of the same size. Email team@cardoonstudio.com, and we’ll arrange a personalised order for you.

Our minimum order is 50 tiles, with individual samples available separately. This helps our independent makers and small family-run workshops cover the minimum costs of small-batch production and sustain their craft.

When will my order arrive, and what does delivery cost?

Tiles are usually dispatched within 5 working days, plus transit time to your address. Delivery charges are shown on each product page and confirmed at checkout. Tiles are excluded from our free-delivery offer.

If you’re working to a project deadline, contact team@cardoonstudio.com before ordering. We’ll confirm the expected delivery timeframe and advise on the best option for your project.

What happens if they arrive damaged?

If your tiles are damaged in transit or have a quality defect, we’ll replace the affected tiles within 7 working days. Email team@cardoonstudio.com with your order number and photographs of the tiles and packaging so we can arrange replacements.

For cancellation and returns information, please check the terms on your chosen tile’s product page before ordering.
